This large beech tree unfortunately failed due to extensive rot in the stem caused by Inonotus hispidus. Essentially eating away at the heart wood causing stem failure. Luckily this was in a wooded car park with nobody around. The tree was safely removed by anchoring into the healthy stem and a secondary line in a neighbouring Lime tree. We pulled the stem over using a Winch. All wood was kept on site and woodchip utilised for weed supression.

What is Inonotus Hispidus?

Inonotus hispidus is a fungus and a plant pathogen that is commonly known as shaggy bracket. It has been used in eastern Asia as a remedy for various illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and stomach ailments. It grows on the stems and branches of several broad-leaved trees, especially ash, apple, plane and walnut. It causes a white rot decay that weakens the heartwood of the trees. The fruiting bodies are bracket-shaped and have a hairy upper surface that is brown to orange-gold in color. They exude a yellowish liquid on the underside and blacken in autumn.
