Removing a tree is the operation of chopping down, extracting or otherwise eliminating a tree that poses a risk to security, property or beauty. Removing a tree can be a complex and expensive task that requires professional expertise and equipment. Removing a tree may also be subject to legal rules and permissions depending on the location, size and condition of the tree. Therefore, before deciding to remove a tree, it is important to consider the alternatives, such as pruning, trimming or disease treatment, that may preserve the tree and its benefits for people and wildlife.

What are the reasons for tree removal?

There are many reasons why trees might need to be removed. Some of the most common reasons include:

The tree is dead or dying
The tree is dangerous
To avoid fires
Damaging home foundations
The tree is severely damaged
The tree is sick or bug-infested
Encroaching on property structures

UK regulations for tree removal

If you want to cut down a tree, you should seek advice from your local council or the relevant government department, such as the Forestry Commission. If you own your home, you do not need permission to chop down a tree that is only in your garden, unless it has been designated as needing preservation through the Tree Preservation Order or Conservation Area. If a tree must be chopped down outside of a private garden, you may need a felling licence. If the tree, or trees, amount to 5 cubic metres of timber by volume, it’s usually an offence to chop without one. The relevant government department will discuss conditions with you before issuing a licence.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Aston and his colleague arrived on time, and were very professional, and did a very good job. Always checking the amount to cut back before proceeding. They did an excellent job of tiding up the cuttings on the ground. Other gardeners have not been so thorough. I would certainly use them again.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Kiwi Tree and Hedge Services attended our property on 5 August 2026 to trim a large and dying Saphora Japonica and to cut back a lane edge and very overgrown hedge. They carried out an excellent job, arriving on time, working efficiently throughout and tidying thoroughly on completion. It was a pleasure to have them here and we are extremely pleased with the result and will have them back for a further job soon.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Aston and his team came to remove some trees for us. He arrived on the time he stated he would and was incredibly professional throughout the whole job. After removal, Aston and his team tidied up after themselves. I couldn’t be more happier with the work and will be definitely using him again.

Dan's service was exceptional. Pricing was fair, transparent, and exactly as agreed—no hidden costs.

It’s obvious Dan takes pride in doing the job properly, not just quickly, and is immaculately tidy.

Professional, skilled, reliable, and great value for money. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
